SBS Documentary Homeland Story - a great watch on TV!

A great watch!
An intimate portrait over 45 years of the East Arnhem Land Homeland of Donydji narrated by Damien Guyla whose family has always lived on their ancestral country. Using archival footage compiled by anthropologist Dr Neville White, Damien traces his clan's transition from the Stone Age to the digital age in three generations. Dr White's deep friendships with Damien's grandfather and his two uncles are a story of a complex balancing act between joining the modern world yet retaining the knowledge and customs built up over millennia. Donydji is blessed in many ways. It is peaceful, drug and alcohol free. Children are taught in both English and two local languages by Damien's sister, Joanne, in a school purpose-built by a partnership between Rotary, Dr Neville's Vietnam Vet mates, and the young men of Donydji. But the community is small and remote. Access to health care is difficult. Mining companies and government policy put massive pressure on the clan to give up their ancient culture, customs, languages and country. How is it possible to straddle both worlds? Why does this homeland 'work' when so many others don't? How can the clans of Donydji retain their ancient practices and knowledge.
